More Maori Children Now School Pupils

The increasing number of Maori school children is referred to in the annual report of the senior inspector of Maori schools, Mr W. Parsonage, presented to the House of Representatives. The report shows that last December there were 17,647 Maori children on the rolls of the public schools as distinct from Maori schools, 1056 more than in the same month of 1948. In addition, '2,139 attended the Maori schools. Maoris from public and Maori schools going on post-primary education totalled 1645, or 63 per cent of the number of Maoris leaving the primary schools. The report says the whole of the Maori scholarship system is under review to bring it more into, harmony with changed post-primary education conditions.

The staffing of Maori schools during the year was again difficult.
