Order Of Reference For Port Inquiry Is Set Out
The order of reference for the committee of inquiry which is to investigate proposals for the development of a port in the Bay of Plenty was announced by the Minister of Works, Mr Goosman. The committee, which consists of Judge Archer, Mr D. S. G. Marchbanks, chief engineer to the Wellington Harbour Board, and Mr F. H. McAuley, a former chief accountant of the Railways Department, is expected to sit in Rotorua towards the end of this month. The first question to be answered by the committee is whether there is need for further port development in the Bay of Plenty in the immediate future. If the need is considered to exist the committee will discuss the following points:— What is the most suitable site, taking into account the probable future development of the area which the port should serve? What authority or authorities should be responsible for undertaking any development that plight be required? What works are recommended and to what standard is development recommended in each case? What would be the cost of any works recommended? The committee is also given authority to report on any other matters arising out of the inquiries • which it considers should be given consideration. ‘"The decision to establish the tribunal has been taken in view of the importance of the port question,” Mr Goosman added. “It demonstrates beyond doubt the sincerity of the Government in its desire that a decision to develop a Bay of Plenty port should take into consideration all the facts which may be presented by interested parties.”
