IT SEEMS THAT THERE WILL BE AN ELECTION
(By The Man in the Street)
There seems now to be little doubt that there will be an election for the Mayoralty of Whakatane next month—the town’s first for 25 years. Only one candidate, Mr H. G. Warren, has been definitely named but at least three others have been approached. In a plethora of rumour and speculation, the sifting of wheat from chaff is difficult but that one or more of those named will eventually come forward there seems little doubt. None of those whose names are being freely mentioned will say at this stage that he will be a candidate. In walks through the Strand, a newspaper representative is constantly asked “Will Sid Shapley come out?” “Will Dick Cobbe give it a go?” and so on. I?ven if we knew the answers definitely, we couldn’t very well give them without the permission of the people concerned but we have our own ideas.
The trouble is that those people who would like to “come out” are hedging. None wants to make up his mind until he knows what the other fellow will do. They have not realised that now is the time to make announcements and “get cracking.” We think, however, that at least one person other than Mr Warren will eventually pluck up his courage and state his intentions. There may yet be a lot of fun between now and November 18.
