SUNDAY MOTOR-CYCLING

Sir,—As I write this letter there is terrific noise of motor cycles with open mufflers not far from the Borough boundary, evidently holding a sports meeting or something of the kind. This state of affairs has been going on all day. Although not being a churchgoer, 1 do think Sunday should be a quiet cay for all. The law does not allow horse racing on Sundays, so why allow motor bike racing on Sundays. We had a demonstration o! a lunatic racing around on a motor cycle one Sunday when a traffic cop was unlucky to get killed. Today there are dozens of them so I presume the traffic police are more interested in insisting on bells on children’s push bikes which, by the way, are neither use nor ornament, than chasing mad motorists who delight in making as much noise as possible. May I suggest that any of these motor cycle speed fiends, be allowed to carry on, provided they race miles ffom the nearest dwelling. As it is, the sound can be heard three miles away and is a perfect nuisance to all, who are not interested in motor bikes. A fleet of bombers could not make more noise, yet nothing is done to prevent the nuisance. What are the religious bodies 'going to do about it, or the local authorities? Are these motor cvcles going to have an “OPEN SLATHER.” Whakatane, September ; 18, 1950.
