A MISCONCEPTION
Sir, —Statements have been made publicly by prominent citizens that it is the intention of the owners of the theatres at Whakatane to remove the stage from the Grand Theatre.
These statements have been made in good faith but I have the authority of my organisation to state that they are without foundation, on the contrary we intend to remodel and modernise the Grand Theatre when building conditions are easier and the stage will definitely be retained and no doubt improved upon. It is well known that my organisation, in addition to being an exhibitor of motion pictures, is also one of the largest importers of stage and flesh and blood shows in New Zealand and we must have theatres with well equipped stages for this popular form of entertainment.
In the past the use of the Grand Theatre has been granted absolutely free of charge for gatherings such as Anzac services when the weather has been unfavourable, and for Civic Functions. The reception to Lady Baden Powell, and the free use of the theatre to the Legion of Frontiersmen for their Dominion Conference church service are two cases in point. Yours etc., A. R.
