New Teachers Start Work

New Zealand primary school staffs were augmented when the schools opened for the spring term by 280 probationer-assistant teachers.

These teachers, men and women, have just completed the 46-week concentrated course at the training colleges in the four main centres. They are mainly in their late twenties, but a few are in their forties. The majority of the men are exservicemen.

A second group of more than 300 trainees began their 46-week course a the training colleges this week. While these groups will go some way toward relieving the teacher shortage, a senior officer of the Education Department says that many more are still required. If more of the same sort of person of mature years and good character offer their service they will be more than welcome. The experince of the scheme so far gained indicates that ex-servicemen whose experiences overseas hav helped mature them are among the best possible material for the teaching profession.
