WINTER SHOW OFFER APPROVED; COMMITTEE MEETS
Acceptance of the Bay of Plenty Winter Show Association’s offer to sell its building to provide part of the funds required for a Community Centre and improvement of the Domain was recommended when the Whakatane War Memorial Organising Committee held its first meeting last night. Fifty-one organisations had responded to a request that representatives be elected, said the convenor, Mr L. D. Lovelock. A roll call revealed that delegates of nearly 60 organisations were at tne meeting. Mr H. G. Warren was elected chairman.
On the proposal of Mr Slipper, it was decided to appoint a paid organising secretary and Mr J. Kelsey was elected temporary secretary pending the appointment of a paid officer.
A building which would serve the purposes of the Winter Show Association would also serve other bodies, said Mr Otley, % when he explained that the Association, m offering to sell its building and donate the proceeds, asked that the Centre be made available for and be suitable for shows.
On the motion of Mr G. A. Wilkes, it was decided that the committee disassociate itself from adverse criticism of the Association’s offer and recommend the Borough Council to accept it. Sub-committees arranged for were planning and building and finance with others held over.
It was agreed after argument, to aim to raise £30,000, including sub • sidy.
