Pin-Pricking Alleged Against Labour Department

Allegations of pin-prickling were brought against the Department of Labour and Employment by A. M. Bisley, managing-director of A. M. Bisley and Co. Ltd., Hamilton, when in the Whakatane Court yesterday, this firm, represented by Mr B. S. Barry, appealed against a requisition made by the department for improvement in washing facilities at the company’s Whakatane branch.

Twenty-four to 30 pages of correspondence had been received on the subject, said Bisley. Exception to the statement of pinpricking was taken by Mr J. McGlone, who represented the department. This was a most serious allegation, he said. Bisley and Ernest Shuker his local manager said they considered the present facilities to be sufficient. Facilities for heating water were provided and there was a cold water tap in the yard with liquid soap and Solvol available. Two men were employed. Their premises were leased, they said and they hoped to buy them so that they could be renovated or re-erected, in which case the Department’s wishes could be carried out. ,

The magistrate, Mr Walton, S.M., stipulated that a sink with hot and cold water laid on should be provided with clean towels or waste, the work to be done by November.
