Underground Power Reticulation Planned For Commercial Area

The hope that it would not be long before all electric street wiring in the Whakatane commercial area went underground was expressed by the electrical engineer for the borough, Mr F. W. Lysaght, yesterday. He said plans were now well under way for placing all cables underground.

This underground reticulation had many advantages, Mr Inysaght said. Beside adding to the appearance of streets it did away with unsightly power poles and wiring. The poles were often a danger to traffic while the aerial wiring wai in constant need of repair. Underground cables were well protected and did not undergo the same wear as those exposed to the weather. The cost of maintenance was very much less. Mr Lysaght said it was hoped to introduce underground reticulation soon so that it could be extended at less cost as the town expanded. At the present time it was only intended to do this to the commercial area. The residential area could not be considered because of the high, cost involved.
