INTRODUCTION OF QUOTA SYSTEM OF SAVING POWER

The quota system of saving power is to come into operation at Whakatane during this month. All domestic quotas have been sent out and from the present monthly readings of meters quotas are to begin. Application has been made by the borough electrical committee for the immediate lifting of the 10.30 p.m.-midnight cut and it is intended to ask for the lifting of the Sunday afternoon cut also. The committee has emphasised that the quota is a figure to work to and within which each consumer must endeavour to keep. A charge will be made only on the power actually used so that consumers who keep within their quotas will not only be saving power but also cutting down on their electricity bill. In most homes units are lost chiefly through hot water systems. In this the greatest saving can be made by turning them off between the hours of 12.30 p.m. and 4 p.m. The introduction of the individual allocation does not mean that there is more power available. It only means that Whakatane has been given a much more desirable way of saving power than previously. But the need for conserving electricity is just as great as previously. Yesterday the town clerk, Mr L. D. Lovelock, appealed to all consumers to give their quota a trial. If they were dissatisfied after a reasonable time they should write to the committee disclosing their objections. These would be considered.
