Mr J. Platt Gow, Y.F.C. Vice-Chairman To Leave The District

At the quarterly meeting of the /Eastern Bay of Plenty District Cora;mittee of Young Farmers’ Clubs the resignation of the vice-chairman, Mr J. Platt Gow, was accepted with regret. Mr Gow is leaving the district.. He was thanked for his recent good work in organising the successful tour of lYA’s mobile recording van. Mr Wallace Luxton, .Awakeri, was elected vice-chairman .unopposed. A .special welcome as a new memIber of the .committee was extended to Mr Keith I’Anson, who has come .from the Te Puna district to farm ;at Awaiti Road.

Reports from clubs' showed that .the eight senior clubs had a total -active membership of 195 with 93 in the. two High School clubs. Club activities during the past quarter have been very satisfactory and include debating, stock judging, field days, and the entering of Courts in the Bay of Plenty winter show and Ihe Waikato winter show. Quite a number of recordings were also made on lYA’s mobile recording machine. A threatened loss oh the second annual ball was turned into a slight profit by clubs taking an active interest in the position. General dissatisfaction was expressed with the scale of points for .judging -at the Waikato winter show in the Y.F.C. courts’ competition •and a much more suitable scale was worked out and forwarded to the council for consideration.

A second remit expressed dissatisfaction with a new Federation debating rule restricting interjections at Y.F.C. debates. The committee considered that this rule was not in the best interests of Y.F.C., in that it also restricts the liveliness of debates as well as restricting the training of members in public speaking, where ability through practice to deal with interjections and either to ignore them or to turn them o advantage is essential for success. The remit asked that the question be re-opened for discussion with a view to replacing the new rule with the old one, allowing reasonable interjections.
