NOTED WAIMANA ROAD SEES IT'S 28th ACCIDENT
Recognised as one of the most dangerous sections of the Whaka-tane-Opotiki State highway the S shaped portion near the top of Eagle's Hill, Waimana, claimed another accident on Sunday evening when a car went over the bank and extensively damaged the metalwork. Apart from slight abrasions suffered by two of the occupants nobody was injured. So far there have been 28 accidents on this hill, nearly all of them at the same spot. Sunday's accident involved a car load of Mount Manganui golfers who were returning home from Opotiki, where they had been playing in the final of the Bay of Plenty Association's teams competition. At the S bend visibility is poor and the driver aparently misjudged the winding abrupt bends. The car went over the side of the road at about 7.15 p.m.
People living near the hill consider the road should be straightened and the bends cut out. Although the 28 acidents so far recorded are known to have happened it is believed that there have been others not serious, which have not been reported.
