Society Completes Street Planting Of Fruit Trees

The planting of fruit trees in Salonika Street; the first stage of an interesting experiment, was completed by the Whakatane Beautifying Society during the weekend when 20 feijoa trees were planted. This brings the total number of trees planted in the street to 38, the other 18 being orange, lemon and grapefruit. Residents of the area have greeted the Society’s efforts with enthusiasm and already a number have promised to look after the trees near their properties. Some have erected protective scrim about them to protect the plants from the children and careless adults. The Society has plans to continue planting trees in streets. Crete Street and Soutars Avenue are the next to be taken over. Should the residents be agreeable it is hoped to plant standard roses along both sides of the road. Should this eventuate these two streets will be among the most attractive in the borough.
