UNSATISFACTORY COLLECTION OF MAORI RATES
In direct contrast to the outstanding collection of Maori rates made in the Whakatane County last year, almost a full collection being made, the collection in the neighbouring county of Tauranga is far from satisfactory, according to the county clei’k, Mr E. M. Fox, in a report presented to a special meeting of the council. Mr Fox said that grouping Maori and European rates it.had been found that for estimate purposes, 10 per cent .of rates could be deleted as not likely to be collected.
Of £12,833 Maori rates levied or outstanding at the beginning of 1950, only £4720 (38.2 per cent) were collected, £7198 (56.9) were written off and £915 (4.9) remained outstanding. The amounts collected for the years 1948-49, 1947-48 and 1946- ‘ 7 were: £5016 (37.8), £3261 (-0.0) and £3174 (32.0). The percentage of European rates collected for the year ended March 31, 1950 was 97.6 and that for Maori rates 38.2 per cent. In both classes the rates collected showed a gradual increase since 1946-47 when the percentages were 94.7 for European and 32 per cent for Maori rates. During the past year £1270 in European and £7198 in Maori rates were written off by the county, the former including £lOl4 from Crown land.
