PRESENTATION OF “TWELFTH NIGHT” AT WHAKATANE

Although some of Shakespeare’s plays have been presented in recent years at Whakatane on the screen it is a long time since a live Shakespearian play has made its appearance in the district. For i'his reason alone the presentation of Twelfth Night at Whakatane this week will arouse considerable . ini' I '' est.

The company staging the play recently completed a successful season at Auckland and is now on tour c-.f the North Island. Most centres are being visited but special em-_ pbasis. is being placed on bringing Twelfth Night to the smaller towns that are often missed out by the large overseas touring companies. The cast has been drawn from all over New Zealand and some of the country’s finest actors make their appearance. Two of the members are to join the Old Vic drama school, London, before the end of the year. The producers have extensive experience in acting and production. Grederick Farley came to New Zealand in 1948 from the English theatre while Harold Baigent has had a wide experience in the theatrical world both in New Zealand and America.

Twelfth Night is a gay racey play, the last of Shakespeare’s great comedies. It has a set of robust comic characters whose antics are relieved and heightened by exquisite romance.
