Aware Of Maori Land Problem
“I am aware that this country has a Maori land problem,”. said the Minister of Works, Mr W. S. Goosman, speaking to members of the Kawhia County Council. “This Maori land problem will have to be tackled before the country is very much older; in my opinion it has Joeen put off too long.” * He was replying to a statement made by the chairman of the county council, Mr Max W. Coutts, who said that the Maori people held a large proportion of the land in the country, including the best of it. The land was mainly undeveloped and over the last 10 years had yielded only 7.16 per cent of the rates levied on it.
