Crazy Transport Set-Up Of Ports In Bay Of Plenty

What was described as the “crazy set-up” of transport at the Whakatane and Tauranga ports was made by the Minister of Works, Mr W. S. Goosman, to the Kawhia County Council when replying to representations to have the Kawhia harbour considered for development as a west coast port. He said there would have to be an investigation made of the potentialities of the harbour and the country. Mr Goosman said that he was quite satisfied that there would have to be a reorganisation in the transport set-up. A recent tour of Tauranga and Whakatane ports had made him realise the crazy set-up into which the transport had' got, especially in the Auckland Province.

“We have been channelling all our imports and produce through Auckland. We cannot afford to go on channelling all our imports through one main centre,” he continued.

The railways were seriously handicapped by congestion. It might be of interest to note that on the main trunk line, 418 miles, 40 per cent of all transport for the North Island was carried, which was 13 per cent higher than for the entire South Island.
