Heavy Rain Causes Slips On Highways
Heavy rain last night, which finished off the extremely wet spell of the last few days, caused minor flooding in most districts and served to turn many unsealed roads into a sea of mud. County roads and main highways suffered in some places to make them almost impassable. Slips in the Waimana Gorge held up traffic for some time on the Whakatane-Opotiki highway and some cars made a detour by way of Ohope. The slips had been cleared late yesterday to let traffic through. On the Whakatane-Tauranga road traffic could just get through the washed out portion near Matata but they had to be towed by tractor. On the Rotorua highway slips delayed traffic near Te Teko but around the lakes the road was yearly impassable.
