NEW CLUB’S FIRST HUNT AT THORNTON
Followers of the Whakatane Hunt Club’s first hunt at Thornton on Saturday expressed themselves more than satisfied with the initial performance of the new pack of hounds. The Master, Mr W.' Goldsmith, led close on 80 riders with hounds in chax-ge of the Huntsman, Mr R. Gordon, assisted bv Messrs J. Haslam and Thompson. Amongst the riders were a number of children attending their first hunt, and they were capably cared for by Messrs J. Moore, L. Davis and C. D. Blomfield. Breakfast and afternoon tea were provided at the Thornton Hall, served by women helpers. Toasts were honoured to the King, the Ladies (proposed by Mr J. Haslam) and the landowners (proposed by Rev Fr. Curley) responded to by Mr C. Hyland. Hounds drew in Moore’s place, and the hunt swept through Cruse’s and Hyland’s to Mexted’s, where the scent was lost. However, the pack picked up another in Magee’s and made a kill after a short run.
