BAY FARMERS SHOULD ATTEND DAIRY GATHERING
An opportunity for research workers and practical Bay of Plenty farmers to meet and discuss farming problems is provided by the annual Ruakura Farmers’ Conference Week, to be held at Hamilton from Monday, May 15, to Friday, May 19. The success of the farmers’ week last year and the interest shown by primary producers in the results being achieved at the Department of Agriculture’s Animal Research Station at Ruakura should give added zest to this year’s proceedings, the programme for which is divided into two sections, sheep farming and % dairy farming.
Subjects on which addresses have been arranged for the sheep farming programme on the first three days include “Use of Cobalt in the Control of Bush Sickness,” “Noncastration of Ram Lambs in Fatlamb Production,” “The Field Diagnosis of Sterility in Rams,” “Nutrition of the Breeding Ewe,” “Modern Sheep Dips and Dipping Techniques,” “Deaths in New-born Lambs,” “Control of Internal Parasites in Sheep,” and “New Strains of Pasture Plants and Crops in Fat-lamb Production.”
Subjects for lectures and discussions in the dairy farming programme on the Thursday and Friday include “Some Common Poisoning Problems on Dairy Farms,” “Overseas Development in Milking Machines and Milking Methods,” “Grazing Behaviour Studies as Pointers to Utilisation of Pastures by Dairy Cattle,” and “The Future of Artificial Insemination in New Zealand.”
An open forum on modern methods of weed control will be led by specialist workers in this field from the Rukuhia Soil Research Station, Hamilton, the Department of Agriculture, and Massey Agricultural College. v
