Whakatane County Roads Defended By Councillors

Whakatane County roads compare more than favourably and in some cases are very much better than those of other counties. This was contended by councillors at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council on : Wednesday. They were answering complaints from farmer about the state of county roads. While it was admitted that some roads on the Rangitaiki Plains had a poor surface it was pointed out by the engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner that these were often due to poor foundations.

The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, said that to seal roads was very expensive and unless ratepayers liked to foot the bills he could see no other way of doing the work. It was mentioned that the cost of sealing a portion of four miles of roading in the Waikato was expected to be about £29,000.
