EXTRA EVENING POWER CUT MADE IN BAY DISTRICT

Because of an increased consumption over the week-end an additional power cut from 10.30 p.m. to midnight was started in the whole of the Bay of Plenty Power Board’s area last night and affected both the Whakatane and Opotiki districts. Announcement of the extra cut were broadcast by IYZ on Saturday and yesterday so that it was not totally unexpected. At present the following power cuts now operate each evening. From Monday to Thursday and Saturday the evening cut from 6.30 p.m. to 7.45 p.m. operates. This cut is not made on Friday night while on Sunday the power is off from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. The new cut from 10.30 until midnight is made every night. In addition from next Sunday an afternoon cut'from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. is to be made in the borough only every Sunday. Stressing the seriousness of the position the borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, said this morning that consumption was still not near the required figure but the authorities were doing their best to break it down. Although the cuts had helped there was more power to be saved yet.
