Heavy Rain Causes Streams To Rise
Sarting late Thursday night the heavy rain which fell until the early hours of Saturday morning filled streams and rivers of the district caused some anxiety to a few Whakatane people at what appeared to be indications of a flood. The area most seriously threatened was in Douglas where the Wainui Te Whara Stream rose to within two inches of a bridge decking, and hung there for about half an hour before beginning to recede. For some time it appeared that it would break the banks but these held until the water dropped. There was no serious damage. The river rose and during Saturday some drift wood came down there was no- flooding from this source.
