Another New Timber Milling Settlement Of Rotoiti Company

The first log was cut recently at the Rotoiti Timber Company mill situated at Whakamaru, about four miles from Mangakino. Of modern design, the jnill differs from most in that its plant is all electric. The huge breaking down saw is run by a mol or generating 100 A 72 h.p. motor drives the “breast” saw, the log winch is driven by a 32 h.p. motor and the “deal” saw 40 h.p. and there are several 3 h.p. motors in use.

It is estimated that 11,000 feet will be cut daily for a start, then as the mill is run in the amount of cut timber will increase.

All “native” timber, the logs will be transported from the bush about six and a half miles from the mill.

Living conditions for the employees are of a very high standard, and the housing centre is fenced and set out neatly. The houses are of two and three bedroom design and /are self-contained. The children living in the settlement attend the Mangakino school and are transported daily by car.
