Highway Improvement Further improvements are being made to the Opotiki-Whakatane State highway and work is proceeding at Nukuhou in bringing the road up to standard. Flower Show The Eastern Bay of Plenty Women’s Institute held a combined flower show at Opotiki yesterday. The show took place at St. Mary’s Hall. The proceeds were added to the headquarters building fund of the W.I.
Sports Ground Competitors from the Eastern Bay of Plenty high schools did not like the sports ground used at Tauranga for Saturday's sports, according to an Opotiki report. The surface Was considered to be very inferior when compared, with the Opotiki and Whakatane grounds which were used for the sports held at these two towns.
Meths, The Drink He thought there had been 13 deaths in the past eight months through drinking methylated spirits, said Major A. B. Sutton, cf the Salvation Army, at a Wellington inquest when the Coroner, Mr W C. L. Mellish, emphasised the dangers of the practice. Though people thought that the drinker of methylated spirits diec| of disease in the liver, it was usually the brain which was affected, he said.
V egetable Bug Again The green vegetable bug, Nezara viridula L.. which has been seen in some Whakatane gardens is now reported to have been seen in most centres from Whakatane along the coast eastwards and as far down as Gisborne. They are said to be spreading rapidly and all gardeners and farmers are being asked to keep a watch for the pests and when found to take immediate steps to destroy them. Fewer Jobless Than Ever
Unemployment is down to the lowest level ever recorded in New Zealand, says the monthly reviewissued by the Department of Labour and Employment. At the of last month only 30 people—27 men and three women —were enrolled with the department as unemployed. Of these, 19 were classified in the semi-employable cate-gory,-while only 17 were in receipt of an unemployment benefit.
Awakeri Dental Clinic
A mistake which appeared in the last issue of the Beacon has been pointed out by an Awakeri resident. Apparently there is no, dental clinic at the school and the report, w§bch was contributed, was misunderstood. The true position is that p.’ans and specifications for a dental clinic have been prepared but alterations of the specifications to make them suit present day conare now under consideration.
