New Zealand’s Part In Sth. African War Told After 47 Years
Forty-seven years after the end of the South African War a book on the part played by the New Zealanders in the war is to be published.Ht is called “The New Zealanders in* South Africa.” Five writers were employed on the task of writing such a book, says MajorWGeneral H. K. Kippenberger, editor-in-chief, New Zealand War Histories, in a foreword to the book. But for the perseverance of the South African War veterans, their - resolutions at annual conferences, and their letters and deputations to Ministers, the project would have been shelved and the authors’ manuscript buried in the Dominion’s archives. In 1901 a staff officer of the New Zealand forces was appointed to compile and edit.a report on the part taken by New Zealand forces in the war. In due course a brief report had been sent. Then, in 1902, a Christchurch journalist and schoolteacher worked on the history, but gave ( up the task after some month's. An officer of thp New Zealand forces succeeded him in 1903.
