Fire In Tar Drums At Awakeri Depot

Extensive damage to nearby buildings was narrowly averted when a tar dump in the Works Department depot at Awakeri caught fire at about 7 a.m. today. Flames were kept from spreading by workmen until 1 the arrival of the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade at about f 8 a.m. when the outbreak) was brought right under control with the use of hoses. The fire started when a drum that was being heated caught alight. Flames soon spread along a line pf tar drums and within a few minutes thick clouds of black smoke were bellowing skyward. Some drums were saved by workmen who were on the -job and worked furiously for some time until the flames were confined to a certain area.
