Good Swimming At Whakatane Club’s Championships
There was a noticeable improve- * Anent in the standard of swimming in all classes at the annual championships of the Whakatane Swimming Club held at the school baths on Saturday. Races were keenly ' / contested and some fast times recorded. The weather was fine with conditions generally good for swimming. The championship winners were .Helen Mary and Roland Paton, Tiny Tots/ and Nancy Kilgour and Murray Reid, juniors. The intermediate titles vwent to Joan Chadwick and Barry Cave. Trophies were presented by the club president, Mr J. R. Francis, who congratulated all competitors '■ . and instructors for the progress made during the year. He pointed out the desirability of a strong swimming club at Whakatane to teach as many people as possible to .swim 'and to provide competition in the sport. , The McNaughton Cup, donated by Mrs E. McNaughton for the . most \ improved swimmer was awarded to both Emily McFarland and Mary .Kilgour. Each swimmer will hold it for shj months. The President’s . 'Trophy resulted in a dead heat between Meryl Thompson and Molly .Ault. Silver medals were presented f to each championship winner while a special prize went to lan Baltimore for learning to swim at four ;years of
