Discolouration Of Lake Rotoiti By Thermal Disturbance
The eastern end of Lake Rotoiti, normally translucent, is at present discoloured dark brown as the result of a thermal disturbance in the lake in the early hours of Tuesday morning. \
The discoloured area is at least half a mile in covering the easternmost point of the lake abutting on Hongi’s Track. Residents in the vicinity report having heard a dull, heavy explosion early on Tuesday morning and soon afterwards, it was noticed that mud was discolouring the waters of the lake and was spreading over a wide area.
The activity was unexpected, as although there is activity on the sides of Lake Rotoiti, notably at the end of the Tikitere fault line and a small spring at the Manupirua baths, these are some miles from the scene of the disturbance.
