COUNCIL WANTS HILL COUNTRY DEVELOPED

In the hope that some comprehensive and progress scheme may be started to develop the large areas of Crown and Maori lands at present lying idle in the County the Whakatane County Council has decided to approach the Minister of Lands and Maori Affairs on the problem. This decision was reached after the Council had considered a report from a special land committee set up some months ago to go into the question. Last year the Council formed the committee to report on the possible utilisation of hill country surrounding the Rarigitaiki Basin. It was considered that much of the land in the hills could be brought into production. - , Commenting on the situation the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, remarked that the Minister was, taking the position very seriously and felt sure he would be interested to discuss the question. He suggested that the Minister should be written to asking him to confer with the Council '’when next he was in the district.

In the meantime it was decided to compile a list of all such undeveloped land in the County.
