LOCAL MAORI FIELD SUPERVISOR LEAVES DISTRICT
There svas a large and representative gathering from the Department of Maori Affairs both at Whakatane and at Rotorua and other Government Departments to a farewell to Mr and Mrs E. H. C. Morice at Whakatane last week. Mr Morice, former Maori supervisor at Whakatane, has now been appointed field supervisor for the Department of Maori Affairs at Gisborne. He has been replaced at Whakatane by Mr J. Merritt, Ruatoki supervisor, who now» takes control of that area as well as the Whakatane district.
The Maori Affairs Department, Rotdrua, was represented by the Deputy-Registrar, Mr J. H. Mills, the Housing Officer, Mr C. R. West, formerly of Whakatane, and .Mr J. Clarke, building supervisor. Among those present were Mr and Mrs E. R. Marryatt, Mr and Mrs K. Hannah of the 'Department of Agriculture, Mr and Mrs L. G. Brosnahan, Mrs West, Mr and Mrs J. Hahipene, Messrs H. Rangihou, A. Watson, T. Pohio, J. Merritt, C. A. Aitken and Misses R. Hotene and K. Keepa, all of the Maori Affairs Department, Whakatane. ' Following the speeches the chairman, Mr Aitken, presented Mr and Mrs Morice' with a cheque. Mr Morice said that although he was going to an important appointment he was sorry to be leaving Whakatane. He and his wife regretted leaving the district of which they had so many happy memories and where they had made so many good friends.
