STATE HOUSE ALLOCATIONS & “REMOTE CONTROL”

A committee meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Centre . of the N.Z. Red Cross at Whakatane decided to make urgent representations to the new Minister of State Housing, Mr Goosman, seeking the appointment of a State house allocation committee for the Whakatane district. Delegates expressed the opinion that the local knowledge of local people should make for fairer allocations than the present system of “remote control” from Tauranga. It will be recalled that similar representations were made to the previous Government by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch of the Home Servicemen’s Association, the local branch of the Labour Party and the Chamber of Commerce. The proposition was still “under consideration” when the electors changed the Government.
