CHANCE FOR A “SPECIALIST” AT WHAKATANE

Remember a little book called “The Specialist”? Quite' a lot of people got a lot of fun out of it, and admitted it. Others said it wasn’t quaite naice and chuckled over it in guilty seclusion. But, it' contained an idea that applies forcefully to our own district right now. There is a big chance for somebody to become just that kind of specialist here. You see, the specialist in the book built “privies.” All types for all possible v. nations of the one purpose. What a chance he would have here now! Reporting to the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night, the sanitary inspector, Mr A. R. Knights wrote:—“An inspection recently made in Taneatua reveals that the great majority of pan privies are not properly constructed, and that many of the buildings should be replaced. An endeavour will be made. to carry out an inspection, of all pan privies in the Borough, and a report on them will be submitted. A standard plan is being prepared, and copies will be supplied for approval. Without assistance this inspection can only be made at irregular intervals but will be completed as soon as possible.” Naturally, such an inspection could only be made at irregular intervals, and one imagines it might be a job requiring quite a bit of tact and poise. There are types of people one might find it difficult to approach on such a subject without the coy blush.

After all, to bowl up to a perfect stranger, raise the hat, introduce oneself with a flourish and then say, “Madam, may I inspect your privy?” would take quite a bit of nerve. But that is side-tracking. The main point is /that opportunity is knocking at tne privy door for a man with a little capital and a little imagination to become a specialist in what might build into a big business building little buildings.
