LARGE CROWD SEES AUSTRALIAN SURF TEAM IN ACTION
A crowd of about 300 people were thrilled by a spectacular display of the different methods of surfing and surf life saving by the touring Australian Surf Life Saving team at Ohope yesterday. The high point to which the Australians have developed the unique sport of surfing was well demonstrated but some experienced surfmen, after watching the visitors considered they were no better than New Zealanders, although they showed a marked superiority with the surf ski and were obviously brilliant surf swimmers.
Displays were also given by the champion women’s team of the Whakatane Surf Club and also by a men’s team. To make the full six men the team was made up of four Whakatane members, one Australian and a former New Zealand champion beltman, Mr R. Pelham, Wellington. There was little surf but otherwise conditions were good. The display opened with the three teams in a march past, and this, one of the most spectaclar of sporting events, drew enthusiastic comment from the crowcf. Then followed the individual displays winding up with body shooting and skiing by the Australians.
The Australians did all their drill to New Zealand rules, which are slightly different from those now operating in Australia. The marshall was Mr B. Mclver, Wellington, the New Zealand manager with the team. Before they attended at Ohope the Australians demonstrated various life saving methods at the Heads to .-pupils of the Whakatane High School.
Last night they were the guests of the Whakatane Club at a dance at Ohope. The team left this morning for- Gisborne.
