Main Highways Almost Impassable

With the surface badly torn during the recent d*y spell and turned inot a muddy path of loose mud, in some places more than two feet deep by heavy rain on Friday, travellers over the Whakatane-Roto-rua main highway during ityie weekend found the road almost impassable. On Saturday many people returning from the Rotorua races had their vehicles bogged deep in the mud and right along the road from Hongi’s Track cars were left abandoned on the road. While this road was thought to be in the worst state possible the Rotorua-Paenga-roa highway was even worse. Intending travellers for this road from Rotorua were advised to use alternative routes on Saturday.
