OPOTIKI VIEW OF BAY OF PLENTY DEEP-SEAPORT
According to a recent Opotiki report, the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce has entered into correspondence with the Opotiki Chamber with a view to weaning its support away from the Whakatane deep-sea harbour scheme., Opotiki discussion has made it clear its support of the Whakatane scheme was qualified by the understanding that it was given “on the information available,” and that further/ evidence might change the Chamber’s point of view. It was decided to hold a special meeting to prepare a series of questions on matters which were not clear to be forwarded to the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Short said that the support for Whakatane was “on the information available.” If Tauranga could produce something better then it was up to the chamber to support Tauranga. It was decided to forward a copy of the letter written to the Whakatarys Chamber to the Tauranga Chamber.
Mr Short said that there was some question as to the depth of water further out at Tauranga. Mr Lane said that Tauranga should be told that the Chamber was by no means committed to the Whakatane scheme.
Mr Les. Abbot said that there was plenty of information available about the Whakatane scheme but none from Tauranga. The saving of freight to Whakatane more than made up the difference.in the initial cost unless Tauranga could put up a better argument.
