Green Vegetable Bug Now In The Eastern Bay Of Plenty Area
The Easjtern Bay of Plenty in an area about Te Kaha is one of the several localities where the green Vegetable bug (Nezara viridula L) is now firmly established in New Zealand. Since it was first recorded at New Plymouth in 1944 the bug has spread quickly and is causing many headaches to local gardeners.
The damage ds done to many plants (vegetables, fruit, flowers, and weeds) and is caused by the bugs piercing the soft plant tissues and sucking the sap. Where control measures are not adopted infestation may become extensive, and should the bug spread at the same rate as during the past few years the Department of Agriculture predicts that large areas of the North Island will have become infested within the next four or five years.
