Many Native Birds Live In Urewera
Bird life in the Urewera Country is described by Mr T. Shout, warden of Tongariro National Park, after a tour of the area as the equivalent of that known in most favoured areas of New Zealand prior to destruction caused by man with axe and fire. Pigeons, tuis, belibirds, kiwi and parakeet were seen and heard, hundreds of them. Mhny kiwis were heard at night, and although mountain duck were not sighted, Mr Shout was informed that they are quiet common on the higher water flows.
