Fruit More Plentiful
Fruit trees in Whakatane orchards this year are carrying more fruit than at the same time last year and good crops are expected. Peaches, apples and pears are well loaded as are plums and nectarines. One orchardist said yesterday that he considered the Bay cf Plenty would probably have a g;od year for fruit this summer.
Change of Holiday <A move is to be made by businessmen of the town next week to have the Auckland Anniversary at Whakatane celebrated on . February 6 instead of January 30. This is being done to give the people of Whakatane a chance to attend the British Empire Games rowing, which is to be held at Lake Karapiro on February 6.
Time in Hospital A suggestion by Mr C. A. Suckling that a member of the Board should spend a month in the hospital every year and there would probably then be more improvements made in the hospital, was greeted with laughter at yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board. The chairman, Mr J. Mullins, replied amid more laughter that it was hoped to make the improvements without going through such a painful experience.
Old Company Prospers The latest balance sheet of the Hudson’s Bay Company shows that if is now financially stronger than at any time in its long history. And it is now 279 years old. When this Company was founded by Prince Rupert in 1670, he could not have foreseen that it would go on for nine generations, without any of the defects of old age. It is one more proof that a private enterprise can last longer than any form of Government.
Rowing Regatta Change The annual regatta of the Hamilton Rowing Club is to be held on the Waikato River on Monday, January 30. Four crews from the Whakatane Club will be competing and will travel to Hamiton on January 29, returning after the regatta the following day. In previous years the regatta has always been held on the Saturday of the Auckland Anniversary week-end but the change is being made this year to give competitors in the British Empire Games rowing regatta an opportunity to be present.
Elbow Jolts .... By “Left-Hand Corner” The Australian Returned Servicemen’s League is talking seriously about starting its own brewery. We needn’t worry. Most of us bought breweries while we were in the forces. ' X X X X An article in '‘Efficiency” says there are thousands of costly errors caused through badly made figures. We’ll bet there are a darned sight more costly errors caused through well made figures. X X X X Talking about the new millinery craze, the “roller-bowler,” a story we printed on Wednesday said it could be worn with feathers, ribbons or veiling—or without anything. If the writer meant just what he said our laws must have altered a bit lately. X X X X Propaganda is the other side’s case put so convincingly that it annoys you. X X X X To err is human—but it feels divine.
