Lead Miners Draw High Pay
Employees of the Australian Lead Mining Company, Broken Hill South Limited, are among the highest paid workers in the world. During 1948-49 fewer than 1200 employees of the company received in wages, lead bonus, holiday bonus, and other incentives a total of £1,817,164. This was equivalent to an average yearly income of £ll7O a man for full-time employment. The total lead bonus paid was £619,471, an average for each adult employee working full time of £ll 2s 6d a week. Most employees receive more by way of lead bonus than their ordinary wages. The company’s profit from mining operations during the year was £163.845, an increase of £388,267 on the previous year.
