FEWER PEOPLE GOING FURTHER FOR HOLIDAYS
Figures put through at the Whakatdne office of the N.Z. Railway Road Services over the holiday period seem to suggest that people from Whakatane travelled further this year than last, though not so many of them used the bus routes. Passenger numbers were down, revenue up.
In the week ended December 24 the Whakatane office handled 558 passengers this year, compared with 643 for the corresponding week last year. The week ended Depember 31 also showed a decline in numbers compared with the same week of 1948, being 175 down. In both cases passenger revenue was up.
Though for most people here the holiday period proper is over, there is still quite a lot of passenger movement going on, and this tendency will probably continue now that there is a daily rail service to Auckland.
As was advertised last week, from now until February 18, for the convenience of people wanting to travel to and from the Empire games, and to handle the seasonal traffic between the Eastern Bay of Plenty and Auckland, trains will run daily from Taneatua, and will be met at Whakatane West by Road Services buses. From here there will be two buses each morning, one at 7.5 to connect with the Opo-tiki-Rotorua service car, and one at 7.40 for \ the specific purpose of connecting with the train.
