Americans Hot On Trail Of Auto Improvements

New devices and ideas for improving automobile design and operation are constantly being created by American inventors, the magazine Automobile F&ts says. In 1949, some 5500 automotive patents will be issued by the U.S. Patent Office. More than 400,000 automotive patents have been issued since 1896.

There are 56 companies in the United States making 20 makes of passenger cars, 39 makes of trucks, and 20 makes of buses. There are also 1800 smaller companies making 5000 different makes of automotive parts. Most of the companies maintain their own research staffs which each year produce hundreds' of inventions. The larger firms also have special departments to review the patented ideas and inventions submitted to them by outsiders. Scores of new companies have been created to produce the automotive devices that have been invented by individuals, the magazine notes.
