YOUTH LOSES LIFE BATHING IN RIVER
Bathing in the Rangitaiki river at Thornton on Wednesday evening, Harold Leonard Jones, farm hand, aged 16, lost his life. At an inquest yesterday the District Coroner, Mr C. S. Armstrong, found Jones’s death due to accidental drowning. The funeral takes place at Whakatane on Saturday. At 6.30 on Wednesday evening, Jones, who could not swim, went to bathe in the river in front of the residence of his employer, Mr F. Malaquin. It is thought that, in diving into the shallow water he struck some obstacle that knocked him out. When Mr Malaquin went down to the river five minutes after the youth he saw only the clothes on the bank.
The body was recovered by Thornton residents two hours later.
Deceased was a Wellington boy, Whose mother lives at 39 Nairn Street, Wellington.
