Increased Buying At Whakatane
Starting about Wednesday shopping at Whakatane began to speed up considerably and nearly all businesses have experienced a very busy period. People from all the surrounding districts have .come into the town to finish off ' their holiday shopping. One shopkeeper said that this was the busiest period he had known for many years. Most people appeared to have more money to spend and they were not afraid to spend it. In addition there was a greater variety of goods in shops, and most proprietors had been able to decorate their windows more attractively. ” . Another retailer pointed out that although there were more goods about were still high in some cases. In some goods, he thought there might be a slight drop next year. However, with all the increased business and buying and the apparent determination of most people to enjoy themselves present indications are that Christmas this -year will be more like those of pre-war.
