LARGE ENTRIES IN CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS PARADE

Over 200 children took part in the fancy dress Christmas parade at Whakatane on Wednesday afternoon and almost the same number attended a party tea in the winter jshow building's afterwards. Gay and clever costumes of all descriptions dotted the procession through the town and the winners of each section caused the judges some thought beforehand. The children were marshalled in the playground opposite the Bank of New Zealand early in the afternoon to v await the arrival of Santa Claus. He came soon after on a fire engine and distributed balloons and ice cream.

The truck was beseiged by children of all ages and sizes and then it moved off to lead the i procession through the town, followed by two pipers and then the* children in fancy dress. Through the town a large crowd watched the parade to the' Pohaturoa Rofck where the judging and prize giving was concluded. Judges of the costumes were Mesdames V. Peck and J. E. Winstone, who made the following awarder— Best fancy costume, girls: Gail Armstrong, Hungarian dancer, 1; Lorraine Johnson, Dutch girl, 2; Judith Tebbutt, Rainbow, 3. Boys: Malcolm Philcox, White Rabbit, 1; Roddy Hurndell, Pirate, and Robin Fogerty, deer stalker, equal, 2; Bruce Butler, golliwog, 3. Decorated vehicle, girls: Leslie Chambers 1, Maida Dodds 2, Joyce Haverbier 3. Boys: Red. Cross l.s Best advertising costupie: Janet Philcox, Dressrite, 1; Roger Knights, Surf Life Saving Club, 2; May Robb, Beacon, 3.
