Public Opinion

Though their views on all subjects are freely published here because we believe it our duty to uphold the public’s right to freedom of opinion, our correspondents’ opinions are not necessarily shared by this newspaper. ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES Sir, —I am curious to know, whether it is legal to use electrical appliances in a workshop on Saturday and Sunday causing such interference with reception on the wireless that it is impossible to hear any programme till the ..appliance is turned off, which is after late afternoon, most week-ends. Yours etc., A CONSTANT READER. Ohope. This letter was referred to the Electricity Department of the Borough Council who stated that it is an offence to use any electrical appliance at any 'time that interferes with radio reception. There is nothing to stop any person- working in a workshop during the week-end. Ed.

NEW HOTEL SITE

Sir, —Several business people of Kopeopeo have asked me to voice their, and my own concern with the words of the Mayor of Whakatane, as reported in your paper of December 14, 1949. The subject, New Hotel Site, and io quote from your sub column — Stop Town Spreading, the Mayor is reported to have stated that he would like to see the new hotel nearer the western end of the present business area. If it were built at the present suggested site it would help the town to spread more towards Kopeopeo, and the Council did not want that to happen.

Whilst we are not concerned with the why’s and the wherefore’s of the exact geographical site of any proposed licensed hotel, we are concerned that our Mayor should publicly disassociate himself from the struggle of “Business Kopeopeo” to provide a centrally situated service for the bulk of the population of the Borough. Yours etc., P. J. GREEN. Whakatane.
