UNITED WINS EXCITING MATCH

Although defeating Putaruru by one run on the first innings United were unable to gain an outright win by one run in an exciting race against time in a cricket match at Whakatane on Saturday. Accurate bowling by W. McKenzie, who took five for 18, help to end Putaruru’s first innings at 61. United went in' to bat, and made 62, one run ahead. Putaruru went in to their second innings and an hour before stumps declared after nine wickets had fallen for 144 runs, leaving United to make 144 runs to win outright. The batsmen went at the task valiantly and at the end of the last over had just made 143 for the loss of four wickets.
