New Railway Diesel Locomotives Prove Very Satisfactory
Although only a few months have elapsed since they were placed in service in New ' Zealand railway marshalling yards, the four Britishbuilt “Drewry” diesel shunting locomotives already have proved very satisfactory in operation, states the Railways Department.
As is usual with locomotives of a new design some “teething troubles” have been experienced, but these are being gradually overcome. Assigned to four of the regular shunting rosters at the goods yards, the four new diesels perform an aggregate of 72 hours’ work each day. On the two most important of these “shunts”, each locomotive is in service for 24 hours lyBecause of their lower fuel costs and one-man control, the diesels are more economical to operate than the modern type of light steam locomotive formerly used, and although complete details are not yet available there is no doubt that the savings will be substantial. In addition to reduced operating expenses the use of diesel traction for shunting’ has released four steam locomotives and nine firemen for service elsewhere.
