SIX ATTEND A PUBLIC MEETING AT WHAKATANE

Holiday Carnival A rrangements Made By Taneatua Body

Including five members of last year’s committee a grand total of six attended a public meeting of the Whakatane Christmas Carnival Committee in the winter show building on Tuesday night. There was only one member of the public present and two of the other five were delegates from the Whakatane Board Mills social committee.

The meeting was called to arrange carnival festivities at Whakatane over the Christmas and New Year holiday period for visitors and those people of the town who will be remaining in the district. With such a small attendance nothing could be done and those present decided to call public . meeting in one more effort to start the work as soon as possible. Yesterday the secretary of the committee, Mr J. Duthie, made an apeal to the public of Whakatane to support a carnival in their town. He urged them to attend the next meeting, which will be next Thursday when the preliminary work will be commenced.

A similar number attended a public meeting called for the same purpose last year.

Decorated streets to create a holiday atmosphere and carnival entertainment at Taneatua over the Christmas and New Year holiday period were arranged at a meeting of the Taneatua War Memorial Committee!. An effort is to be made to brighten the streets and, if possible, coloured lighting will be obtained.

Celebrations will commence on the afternoon of Xmas Eve at 2 p.m. when a parade of children in fancy dress will be held. Prizes will be. given. At 7.30 Santa Claus will arrive and dispense bags of sweets to the children. Celebrations will continue on New Year’s Eve when a talent quest will be held. There will be classes for adults and children in singing and dancing. There will also be a poster competition for school children held in conjunction with the festivities.
