TRANSPORT AIMS OF NATIONALISTS ARE EXPLAINED
Addressing an enthusiastic audience of over 200 electors at Opotiki on Saturday, Mr W. Sullivan received an attentive hearing during his lb hours speech. The policy of the National Party was to re-organise the whole four forms of transport under a Transport Board, he said. Transport operators under this policy need have no fears of nationalisation. No further services would be taken over. Mr Hackett had mentioned that, if Labour were re-elected, there would be a combination of Railway and Transport in one portfolio. Was that a further threat to road operators? The main objective of the National Party would be the safety of the people and the best service toi our country at the lowest cost. The railway system would be investigated with a view to diminishing the losses. Air services would be re-organised making it a public corporation. Concerning plans for developing the tourist trade, Mr Sullivan said war, shipping and air services had delayed expansion; but from now on there should be much improvement. i
Housing Facts 1 “People should not be fooled by Labour telling them that the Government has built all the homes in New Zealand,” Mr Sullivan said. “Here are the facts: Over the last four years there were 46,486 homes built in New Zealand. Of these the State provided the plans and money to build 12,857. The number of private homes built was 33,629. State housing provided a little, more than one-third of the total homes built. All homes are built by private enterprise. The State builds only those where trainee labour oper•ates. The National Party will go on with State housing and is determined to overcome the problem in quick time.”
